OVER LOOK OF CHARTERS.

For me Estella was an interesting Character because at first you think of her as a spoilt and spiteful child that is cruel and mean to pip and as she grows up becomes this cynical woman that even the idea of love repulses her but as the her character developed you receive a slight more understanding of Estella as you can see how she was brain washed and manipulated by Ms Haversham who main aim in life was to punish men where as she couldn't do  her mission herself she adopted an innocent baby girl who she would then use and twist her mind against all men. Another interesting aspect how Dickens played with is how Estella is seen by pip as he see's her as better than him in society and how much hes beneath her but the its reveled that she is infact the daughter of  Magwitch the coarse convict which infact made her the lowest of society even lower than Pip. I liked the twist of who Estella's real parents were as it makes you think that you never really know what could come to life and that infact regardless to class everyone is equal. I also think that its interesting that Estella was worse off being adopted by a higher class as Ms Haversham toyed with Estella's mental health where if she stayed with her 'lower' class family she would of been loved and taught what love was instead of being taught how to belittle and manipulate people. I feel Ms haversham destroyed Estella's ability to love and show emotion making me feel pity towards her as she had no hope.

Pip is almost the narrator of the story the hope with in humanity he is always reflective and learning from his life issues and how he has over come them. Pip overall is a kind heated person he even stole food to feed magwitch although he was a criminal that threatened him pip still saw his humanity and helped a person in need he could of fled but didn't that's what I feel dickens wanted to portray pip as the humanity in the story although he does slightly go off when he becomes a 'gentleman' and forgets his family but I think Dickens wanted to show that even the best of people can be tainted by wealth.

Magwitch was an alternative father figure to pip although he was a criminal and is very intimidating Dickens allows you too see glimpses of kindness as he says he stole the food so Pip wouldnt get into trouble He also funds Pip to become a Gentleman without his knowledge where as he could of spent that money on himself showing selflessness and we also find out that hes a criminal by retaliation of the brutal crime of his wife.

Death masks

As preserving the dead was a very important aspect either by photographing them, making busts such as Queen victoria did of her husband she was known for moaning his death for 40 years only ever wearing black and she used to make her staff set out his outfit, medicine, bed pan and bed linning out every day which reminds me of Ms Haversham so knowing Dickens liked to promote public issues and play on life it made me think that he was showing how foolish the queen was by almost greating the story as a joke on her by portraying how holding onto that grief and pain will only hurt you and the others around you and wont bring any joy into her life by holding onto the past. As Queen victoria was seen as a celebrity no wonder why the fashion was dark colours and how everyone seemed to be obbesed with death and preserving the dead. So I made my own versions of death masks using makeup these were my results
My first attempt was on myself I do like the end results as I like the softness of the contouring around the eyes I feel it makes it look more peaceful. Although I think I concentrated  too much on making the face pale and think it would be more effective if I made the contouring more visible and added more depth especially to the fore head. I feel the darkness on the cupids bow works well but I need to blend more of the nose so it doesn't just look like a straight line and to make it seem more 3D. Overall I do like this for my first attempt as I feel it looks quite peaceful on my next 'death mask' I will concentrate more on making it dramatic and blending the fore head in more.
Death mask number two for this example I tried not to higlight as much but to consentrate on the contouring which I feel worked out better I really liked the out come of this espeically the lines of the cheeks and cupids bow I feel they worked well I also tried contouring in a harsher way which I do think looks more powerful on camera although the softer contouring works well on the chin.

My third attempt I feel I went too harsh with the colours although I lik the nose and fore head I feel I could have blended more on the eyes and cheek bone.

Consumption and deathlyness

I feel that death had become an obsession during the Victorian era as so many occurred. If you were lucky to survive child birth and childhood you were only expected to live untill the average of 22 which seems ridiculous in this day and age were the average age of death for a person is around 76 years. By being surrounded by death  the Victorians excelled at telling ghost stories which still has the power to consume readers today. It is tradition in today's society that the dead are at a funeral parlor untill they get burried with only 18% dying at home spending there last few days of being alive away from home comforts and family where as in the victorian era many died as children and were kept at home. It was normal to have known someone who had died recently or to even have had a sibling die there were many reasons why children didnt survive infancy and they were; being malnourished, diseases or accents. Also the hygiene level was at an all time low the water they bathed, drank and cooked with had high chances of having animal fesses in it which added to the low standard of health.

Small pox
small pox is a contagious disease that usually resulted in death the symphtoms of small pox are; Fever,Overall discomfort,Headache,Severe fatigue,Severe back pain and Vomiting, possibly. The first symptoms of smallpox usually appear 12 to 14 days after you're infected.  After a few days small red spots appear over your skin Within a day or two, many of these lesions turn into small blisters filled with clear fluid, which then turns into pus. Scabs begin to form eight to nine days later and eventually fall off, leaving deep, pitted scars. Small pox was a major danger for people as there still is no cure. Queen Elizabeth 1 had small pox but was lucky as she didn't go blind as many do if the escape death she was left with the scars from the disease.

Other harmful diseases were TB were its victims would suffer from coughing fits untill there lungs deteriorated. And also going back to bad hygiene is where Chloral water which was a big issue during the time as the water either had human waste or animal wast in it. but was a struggle to avoid drinking the tainted water as poor people has nothing else to survive on creating a viscous circle of bad health.

Face chart ideas and hair charts

                                                            Ideas for Ms Haversham

My basic Ideas for creating these looks were to play on how exhausted she must had been keeping up with all the hatred within her and how not seeing sunlight or bathing in years must have really aged her skin these designs are quiet similar although I tried changing small aspects in each to see which ones worked best.
For this Idea I would have mixed illamasqua skin base foundation with my kyrolan foundation pallet using the two lightest colours because I want it to look naturally pale and not theatrical. I used my Kryolan eye shadow pallets for the contouring, wrinkles and eye shadow.I used the colours Anis,Black pepper,Caraway,Lavender,Shallot and Fennel for all three of my designs but using them in different ways to try and expand my design.

For this one I went for quite simple bags under the eyes but not too obvious and very strong wrinkles on the forehead. and deep contouring under the cheekbones as Ms Haversham was malnourished. Over all I like this design I like the purple colours underneath the eyes although I feel it could be too seen as too theatrical,

For this design I tried to forget about aging as she may not have been that haggard as she would of only been 40/50. but in the way she had been living she wouldn't have been in the best physical state so I wanted to portray deep bags under her eyes contoured cheek bones and slightly dirty looking. I feel this could be effective especially the deep bags under the eyes  and I would like to progress this further although I do want to experiment more.

For this design I tried a simple look combining aging and exhaustion. I feel this could work well as they say sometimes less is more  I really want to play around with the lips as from the TV series of Great expectations Ms havershams lips really drew me in as they were in such a bad condition and progressed worse throughout.

I really like this design especially the bow at the back I think it will look really effective when finished and This will be my final design.

Another Idea I had was to create a very  large hairstyle that is fasten by plats at each side coming to the back at the center to join and make a roll up bun although I dont think I will use this as I feel like the design could be better.

I was also thinking about creating a look with the use of a ail as an accessory sectioning the hair in a middle parting and taking the har back doing three roll up buns and then having straggley curls at the back with a dirty vail  but I thought it could look like abit cliche'

trying out the different looks-

For these I decided to not do such an obvious aging look but to play with the skin disorders. and how damaged her skin must be to create the broken/flaky skin I used eyelash glue but first I did the base of the foundation so when I started to pick away at the glue it would be the same as the rest of the face for the lips I used several layers of eyelash glue and layered up pieces of tissue to create the flakiness then I played around with adding colour into the lips to make them look sore and painful, I used purple, red, grey ,black and white  to try and achieve a realistic look. I really like how the nose turned out I feel that it doesnt look too much and too theatrical I also like the way the lips look although I still wanna play around with the lips as I want it to be the main aspect I feature my look around.

Portraying two emotions

I chose to do Estella As I feel she has many layers to un ravel as shes such a diverse character. I chose to portray the side where Mrs Havisham is taking over her mind and soul by tainting her innocent young mind and turning it sour. I decided to portray this by adding wrinkles and bags to her face I used a combination of Illamasaqua skin base foundation and Kryolan foundation pallet. For the eyes I used Kryolan eye shadow pallet to create a drained look on her face. In reflection I wish I went more dramatic with the two looks so you could really see the diversity between them. I brushed the brows up to make them seem un kept. and contoured with a grey colour to make her skin look un healthy.

The other side I decided to portray the disguise she puts on I wanted to used peachy colours to show off her youth and by adding colouring to her cheeks and lips but I still wanted to add a slight bag under the eyes to show how draining it must be to always have to pretend to be something else but making it more discrete that then other side. I made the eye brows neater and more in shape and I also realised that I didnt apply foundation to the neck and ears which Is quite distracting although I ran out of time so I need to take that into consideration for my final assessment. As I mentioned earlier I should of gone more elaborate with my ideas although I am pleased with the look.

being a child in the Victorian era

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/victorian_britain/

It was normal In the Victorian era for a family to have ad least ten children's although most died before hitting their teenage years. It wasn't just poor families who had the tragedy of children's death it effected the rich too as the hygiene levels were so low that mainly children were effected by small pox and diphtheria. Although you would be able to tell which children came from wealthy families as they had clean clothes weren't under weight and had an education as they went to school and didn't work as the poor children had to. The less fortunate children were servery under weight more than likely didn't have shoes and clothes were un kept and broken. Children from poor families had to work as they needed as much income as possible which is why I think families grew so big as its seen as abnormal to have such a big family in this generation as I myself have 2 siblings and feel like that's plenty.  Also children were paid less than adults so businesses preferred to use them so they would save money, a lot of Victorian deaths were in the work place hands/limbs getting caught in machinery especially children as they have smaller attention spans and hands are smaller so would be easier for them to get trapped. In this generation it would be seen as cruel to send children into a dangerous work place instead of gaining an education but it was normal for that period. Its insane to think that children as young as 5 years old contributed to the families income.

What I find interesting is that Estella would of been one of these children as her parent Magwitch was a criminal so she would of had to work and earn a living and would had been living in a orphanage. But as Mrs Havisham likes to portray she saved Estella to give her a better life and  introduce her to high society when infact she stripped Estella of happiness as money and possessions doesn't make a person happy the life of a child in the Victorian era wasn't as a child's in this generation no worries and freedom it was in fact full of work and hardship infact their life from the start was almost a burden if they escaped death by disease or work based they still were under privileged and un educated unless they were rich.

Gothic architecture

Gothic Architecture Is another way of drawing people in especially in horrors/thrillers almost every horror film I have seen has a mysterious looking building or house. In the Victorian era beautiful gothic buldings were made. I feel that's another reason people were so obsessed  with the concept of horror as it was everywhere they went it also became fashionable for the house to have a horror feel to it. Even some Victorian houses were built to look like medieval castles with pinnacles and turrets.
These were some images I took around Southampton trying to capture the Gothic architecture

a

I took these images on Southampton common hoping to portray a horror factor which I feel worked well. I tried out different angles and kneeling on the floor to take the from a child's perspective especially the gate as It reminded me of his first encounter of Miss Havishams house. I feel that the image with the smoke worked well to add the smoke I let a cigarette burn by the side of my camera to create the appearance of mist

Houses of Parliament (also known as Westminster Palace) as we know it today, took around 30 years to build, starting in 1840. It was designed by Charles Barry. I feel that this is another example of Gothic Architecture as the sharp points and straight lines create the theme Gothic also the dull colouring.

Another example of Gothic Architecture is when I went to Paris is the Catacombes de Paris which was a very eye opening experience and very shocking as I've never experienced anything like it knowing that I was surrounded by real life skeletons and how they were formed int shames and placed there must of been thousands while down there you could help but have chills and feel un comfortable down there which I feel is the key to Gothic to make you feel on edge

skin disorder

As everyone knows that too much sun can damage your skin from looking at Ms Haversham I wondered the damage no sun can do to your skin. After researching I've discovered that no sun can also as the Sun gives us vitamin D.Vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets in children — in adults it can lead to osteomalacia, where the bones become weak and painful. finding this out made me understand more why Ms Haversham looks so frail.Around 90 per cent of our vitamin D is made in the skin with the help of sunlight — this converts the cholesterol found in every cell in the body into vitamin D. BBC did an article announcing their concern for British people as we dont have that much sun and the health risks which made me think how low Ms Havershams health was for not going out in sunlight in years plus her hygiene level being low as bathing was hard during that peirod of time.

Tv series review of Great expectations

From watching the TV series of Great Expectations really helped me start my project as it gave me a more visual idea of what Victorian beauty Ideals were I really loved the way the make-up was shown throughout the TV series especially Mrs Havishman her character had many layers she was a tainted person from her heart break that she never recovered from which showed with in her nervous ticks  such as the scratching of her hands I loved how the make-up artist progressed throughout the series by making the scratch get worse with the skin more flaky and painful looking. I also thought that her dry lips that were flaking away really added affect to the shadow of a once happy woman. As a whole Ms Havishman was an un-happy woman replaying her past and was suffocating within her own unhappiness. Her whole house was like a memorial for what could of been the happiest day of her life the design of the house with the slowly degrading furniture showing how desperate she is to keep the dream alive. Even still wearing her wedding dress that is dirty and falling apart. From her heart break she became bitter and cynical about love leading to her adopting a baby girl to train her to break every mans heart she came across.which indicated to me how bitter and manipulative she is as a person because she was heart broken meant that she didn't want anyone to be happy and that she felt all men should have their hearts broken even a young naive Pip who portrayed herself to be a generous women who wanted to improve his life style and give him the opportunity to become a gentleman when infact she pays for him to work with his uncle which would automatically kept his life at a low with no room to improve his status within society. She acts like a mother figure in Pips life but taunts and picks on him but gives slight encouragement to keep him drawn to her Throughout the film my feelings for Ms Haversham change as I feel sorry for her at parts as shes is shown as a fragile figure mentally and physically but as her anger and hatred show more my feelings of pity disappear into feelings of hate as she has no remorse for other peoples feelings.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/charles-dickens/9084922/Miss-Havisham-My-favourite-Charles-Dickens-character.html
I love how the make-up looks in this image the ghostly skin as she hasn't seen day light in  years the early styled hair as its pushed in the front with tight curls in the face showing nothing has changed from that day I also like how her skin is whiter than the wedding dress showing how it is decaying. and the scabbing of his lips and marks on her neck showing how she doesnt care what she looks like and has given up on her apperance showing that she has strong depression as people tend not to take care of themselves when suffering with depression.
